Apple Retail Store – Fifth Avenue

What: Apple Retail Store – Fifth Avenue (Midtown Manhattan)

Where: 767 Fifth Ave, New York, NY 10153 (near FAO Schwarz, GM Building, and Central Park)

Architect/Designer: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson | Structural Engineer: Eckersly O’Callahan (glass elements)

About the Building: Apple the king of design and aesthetics also creates equally eye pleasing store designs, particularly its midtown Manhattan location on Fifth Avenue. This 32-foot structural glass cube serves as the entrance to an underground retail store via a circular glass staircase wrapping around a transparent glass elevator.  By day its a skylight bringing natural light underground and at night this lighted cube serves as an advertisement rivaling some of NYC’s best billboards.

How: First off, I was born/raised in the tropical rain forrest of Hawaii and am currently based out of a desert (Las Vegas) so my wardrobe wasn’t quite prepared for the 17 degree weather I encountered while taking these pictures. Because it was so cold I literally walked around the cube once to find my angles and with the second walk around I quickly snapped a couple pictures.  This took all of about 2 minutes to complete.

The second picture is of me shooting directly upwards while standing on the glass staircase descending to the underground retail level of the store.

Far from Perfect: If I was better prepared for the elements and had the busy and bustling stairway roped off for myself, it would’ve been much easier for me to set up a tripod check my framing, angles, and lines to take a perfect calculated shot. However I didn’t have that luxury and was forced to ‘spray and pray’ (taking a lot of pictures and hoping one turns out good lol.)

Post processing: Desaturated the picture, increased contrast, brought out the whites, and used the lens correction filter in photoshop. If this was for a client I’d ensure all the lines were exactly straight and there was no distortion, but because its just for my blog and the fact that it would require hours of photoshopping, I opted out of it. Architecture photography has proved to be quite the challenge once again. But I’ll just keep practicing until I get better at it.

“In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service.”
